I Made my own Wedding Dress.

My husband and I decided to get married earlier than our initial plan. October was in the works but then the world went on lock down with no clear plan on what was to come. Since we wanted to get married anyway, we took advantage of the limitations on gathering sizes and had a small Ghanaian Wedding. With that, came my decision to make my own dress. It was obvious this idea would be met with a lot of opposing views so I kept that to myself till I was quite far in the process. The response when it finally came out is a story for another day but for now, let’s get into the dress making part. You can also check out this video on how I went about it.

Style

I chose view B of V9296 pattern from Vogue Patterns. I had had this pattern for a while so when this strange opportunity showed up, I reached out for it. I liked the cold shoulder, the sleeves and the somewhat revealing bust area. Honestly though, I don’t have a lot to show in that department so I tweaked it to show just enough. Add in miracle working undergarment and the bust area was elevated for days.

For my fabric, I chose a floral cotton satin fabric with silver embellishments on it. It wasn’t necessarily what the pattern recommended but by now, it’s kind of clear I’m selectively daring.

Mishaps

Basically, I’m small in the chest area and relatively curvy in the bottom area. I don’t know when exactly it happened but somewhere between buying the pattern and sewing it, I had expanded in all the right places. That meant making adjustments for the first time since sewing with patterns, on my wedding dress which was supposed to turn out perfectly. The stress was very real.

Since I lived to tell this story, it’s safe to say everything worked out. Including a belt I made on the night before the wedding to cinch me in.
